Designing safe, connected access for a community‑centered facility

AHBL provided civil engineering and land surveying services for the Eastside Community Center in Tacoma. The 55,000 SF facility includes a range of public amenities such as a swimming pool, sports and fitness areas, meeting rooms, and other programmed spaces. AHBL led the civil engineering scope, preparing storm drainage plans and designing off-site frontage improvements to support site access and infrastructure needs.

To evaluate and implement necessary traffic improvements serving both the Eastside Community Center and the nearby First Creek Middle School, AHBL conducted a comprehensive analysis of surrounding roadways, including the bus loop, teacher parking areas, student drop-off access, and traffic associated with the adjacent National Guard office. AHBL also designed future parking and site circulation for the community center, developing a strong understanding of anticipated vehicular and pedestrian patterns. As part of these improvements, AHBL redesigned the primary driveway approach to the parking lot and added a pedestrian crossing along the south side of the site to enhance safety and access.

AHBL’s land survey team completed a comprehensive survey of the 30-acre site, including an ALTA survey and detailed topographic survey. The work documented existing utilities, right-of-way information, and site features, providing a reliable base for design, permitting, and construction.
