New design-build fire station serves a growing community.

With rapid growth in the Richland area, the city was in need of another fire station. Richland Fire Station No. 74 opened in 2015 and became the fourth station in city limits. The new $2.8M building has capacity for 6 firefighters and helps reduce response times in the surrounding area.

The project was not originally planned as a design-build project and was to be located at a different site. However, after investigating the design-build process, the city determined that the station could be built 3-6 months ahead of schedule and on city owned property. This meant that the city did not have to fix a road and install a traffic signal at the original site, allowing more money available for construction of the new station. Through innovations available with the design build delivery method, the project included the fourth apparatus bay which was not originally in the budget.

The 11,600 sf, single story building features six dorm rooms, four drive-through apparatus bays, office space for police and four-fold egress doors that open more quickly than other doors and are more reliable. The station was built on over an existing parking lot. Site improvements included modifying the existing parking lot to accommodate the new building and meeting stormwater requirements within in the City of Richland and Department of Ecology Stormwater Management Manual for Eastern Washington standards.
