Located in a diverse, socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhood, the new Meadow Crest Early Learning Center strives to be a community amenity in addition to a state-of-the-art education center. The new 77,520 sf building is located on the former Hillcrest School site. It features learning spaces for children and adults alike, offering English as a Second Language classes, counseling, and community services.
The project includes a 1-acre inclusive play area with a range of activities and experiences that allows everyone who comes to take part in and play side-by-side. The layout and equipment are focused on creating barrier-free access for all children, regardless of their physical, intellectual and/or emotional challenges. The colorful park includes features designed to encourage healthy physical development, such as slides, swings, spinners, and climbing rocks, as well as non-traditional activities for sensory development
AHBL and the design team took a phased approach to construction to allow the existing school to remain in operation while the new school was constructed. Site improvements included new parking and bus drop off areas, outdoor play areas, and utilities, including grading and drainage amenities. Offsite waterline and frontage improvements including curb, gutter and sidewalk with planter strips along the frontage streets.
