Civil and structural design shape federal Community Living Center

AHBL supported the design and construction of a new 79,000 SF steel‑framed federal facility featuring interior mezzanines, specialized program areas, and the new Community Living Center, which includes a nursing home care unit and a dietetics kitchen. The structural design followed the 2006 International Building Code and the Veterans Administration’s Structural Design Manual, while incorporating architectural elements such as a green roof to help achieve LEED Silver goals. The mechanical mezzanine was engineered with a concrete‑topped composite floor deck and pre‑engineered joists, with careful attention to vibration and noise control.

AHBL’s civil engineering team delivered full site development, including parking, utilities, water, fire service, and stormwater systems. The stormwater strategy uses a sustainable sheet‑flow approach that distributes runoff to rain gardens for treatment, with excess flows conveyed to infiltration ponds and trenches. AHBL also collaborated with the architect to ensure the site design preserved views of Mount Rainier.
