Community‑centered master planning for two beloved Federal Way parks
AHBL worked with the City of Federal Way to develop master plans for two parks within the Federal Way parks system: the 5-acre Brooklake historic community center and the 52-acre Steel Lake Park, which includes a beach area, walking trails, playground, concessions, and other amenities. AHBL provided design, public engagement, and project management support to identify and prioritize future site improvements based on existing conditions, City needs, and community feedback.
For Brooklake Park, the City sought to emphasize the site’s historic character and environmental constraints while creating a blueprint for future development once funding becomes available.
AHBL led an iterative design process for both parks, presenting three design concepts for each site and collecting feedback through multiple public engagement opportunities. This included surveys, community meetings, and coordination with City staff to ensure recommendations reflected community priorities. Following the selection of preferred concepts, AHBL prepared final master plans that incorporated public input and refined design elements. For Brooklake Park, AHBL also assisted the City in integrating the final master plan into its Parks, Recreation, and Open Space (PROS) Plan, ensuring that community-driven goals were embedded in City policy for future redevelopment efforts.
