The general building structure is wood-framed with a conventional foundation. The main classroom wing features pre-engineered wood trusses, open web joist flooring, and several framed dormers for mechanical equipment. AHBL coordinated closely with the mechanical engineer to integrate a catwalk to house mechanical units into the roof trusses over the corridor in the classroom building. AHBL’s design fits the extensive mechanical ductwork into the second floor framing and minimizes floor to floor height while maintaining a high performance wood floor. The new multipurpose room is constructed with concrete masonry unit walls and the roof design utilizes exposed glue-laminated beams with structural insulated panels (SIPS). The SIPS provide a cost efficient way to construct an insulated flat roof by substituting the site constructed layers of ceiling finish, framing members, roof sheathing, insulation and roofing with just SIPS panels and roofing. The lobby area also incorporates architecturally exposed wood framing. AHBL suggested structural details that were used in the multipurpose room and lobby to complement the exposed beams and add aesthetic value to the building.
The Lakeview landscape design utilizes bold forms, appealing textures, and vibrant colors in painterly swathes. The result is a diverse, visually dynamic learning environment and a playful yet cohesive image to the community. The school’s entrance sign is flanked by an alee of Flowering Pear trees and sited in arcs of shrubs and groundcover of contrasting color and texture. The west side of the building is shaded by an evergreen canopy, and the perimeter is wrapped in a landscape that will continually provide seasons of visual interest. The landscape responds to the school district’s need to minimize maintenance costs by siting drought tolerant and disease resistant plants where they are best expected to perform according to growing conditions. Preference is given to native plants and those that naturally exist in similar climates. The landscape design supports the function of spaces by defining circulation, opening vistas, providing shade, and buffering undesirable views. All new planting improvements are watered with an underground sprinkler system equipped with weather sensors for enhanced efficiency.
