AHBL was founded in 1969. Our staff of 80 works together on projects of local and regional significance, serving both public and private clients from offices in Tacoma, Seattle, Spokane, and Tri-Cities. AHBL is committed to creative design, cost effective solutions, capturing and maintaining the sense of community, and integrating our area's natural and cultural heritage into our ever-changing urban landscape. Our relationship-based firm enjoys a reputation for honesty, integrity, and making our clients' needs our number one priority.
In June 2005, AHBL and Martens/Chan Consulting Engineers merged to combine our Seattle resources to provide high quality multidisciplinary services to our Puget Sound-area clients. Seattle-based Martens/Chan has provided structural engineering services to many of Puget Sound's most prestigious architectural firms as well as major medical centers. The merging of our two firms results in an expanded Seattle presence for AHBL and additional support and services for Martens/Chan.
Since 1993, AHBL has been a regional leader in the application of sustainability principles to the built environment. Our work has involved sustainability policy development and goal setting for municipalities; the integration of Low Impact Development (LID) Best Management Practices into local codes and ordinances; master site planning, and the design and engineering of projects following LID and/or LEED standards.
We are active in the promotion of sustainability and have given over 50 educational presentations to various audiences including the GreenBuild International Conference, professional organizations, state agencies, and local municipalities.
AHBL is a member of the US Green Building Council. Through our 15 in-house LEED Accredited Professionals, we have provided planning, landscape architecture and engineering services on over 50 building projects designed to LEED or Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol standards.
