Wayne Carlson inducted to AICP College of Fellows

AHBL Principal Wayne Carlson was recognized by his peers at the American Planning Association’s National Planning Conference in New Orleans when he was inducted into the American Institute of Certified Planners’ (AICP) College of Fellows. AICP is the only nationwide, independent verification of planners' qualifications. Election to Fellow is one of the highest individual honors that AICP bestows upon a member. Wayne is the first planner at AHBL to receive this honor.

Fellows of AICP are recognized for their achievements to the profession of planning and include a small number of AICP planners who have achieved excellence in professional practice, teaching, mentoring, community service and leadership. Wayne was nominated by APA’s Washington State Chapter in the category of Professional Practice.

Wayne’s career spans 26 years and includes work for public agencies and private developers in Washington, California, and Ohio. In addition to his work at AHBL, Wayne also serves as adjunct faculty at both the University of Washington and The Ohio State University teaching a course in Low Impact Development and sustainable design. Wayne has shared his green infrastructure expertise with more than 200 students from North America, Asia, and the Middle East.

Wayne is a recognized leader in green infrastructure planning as illustrated through his authorship of several technical and policy guidance documents on Low Impact Development (LID) including the Eastern Washington Low Impact Development Guidance Manual and the Yakima Low Impact Development Stormwater Design Manual, as well as “Integrating LID into Local Codes and Standards: A Guidebook for Local Governments.” Wayne’s work has made significant improvement and change to the planning profession. His work on technical guidance documents in Washington and California have provided direction to planners who are required to use his guidance to comply with NPDES Municipal Stormwater Permit requirements under the Clean Water Act.
