New Facility for Vashon Center for the Arts Opens

Congratulations to the Vashon Center for the Arts on the grand opening of the new Katherine L. White Hall. This facility is a new 20,500 sf multi-purpose performance hall, and provides performance space, gallery and administrative offices, and adds theater support spaces such as dressing rooms, a green room/multipurpose classroom, a wardrobe room and a loading area. AHBL provided civil engineering for this new facility.

Civil design included demolition of the existing improvements, design of new parking, 12 foot high site walls, pedestrian improvements and street frontage improvements. The site contains four wetlands and a stream on the east parcel with associated buffers.

Drainage collection systems utilize catch basins, area drains, open channels and subsurface pipe systems to collect and direct drainage to appropriate treatment and flow control facilities. Two underground vault detention systems and a media filter manhole are included for the on-site drainage to meet the flow control and water quality requirements. Also included are Flow Control BMP’s for all targeted impervious surfaces. Full dispersion to wetland buffers, Native Growth Protection Areas, porous concrete pavement, rain garden and rain water harvesting are being used to meet this requirement.

The facility was designed by LMN Architects and built by Sellen Construction.
