Whidbey General Hospital expansion features nature‑focused healing design

AHBL provided landscape architecture services for the expansion of Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville, located within Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve. Because of the site’s historic designation, the project required close coordination with the Historic Preservation Committee, the Town of Coupeville, hospital leadership, and community stakeholders. As the town’s first major construction effort in more than a decade, the addition was shaped through extensive public input and careful review.

AHBL designed planting for the full 12‑acre campus, including a healing courtyard garden central to the hospital’s patient‑care experience. The courtyard was envisioned as a restorative space that reduces stress and connects patients, visitors, and staff with nature. Features include a strolling path, regionally specific native and drought‑tolerant plantings, wildlife‑attracting vegetation, and private garden views from each labor and delivery room. The landscape design promotes quiet respite while honoring the natural and historic character of Coupeville.
