Spokane Valley, WA
Balfour Park
Balfour Park serves as the “living room” of Spokane Valley, acting as the essential connective tissue within the city’s evolving civic center. Rather than a standalone green space, AHBL designed the eight-acre park as a functional bridge that seamlessly integrates the Spokane Valley Library and City Hall into a unified, walkable campus. By incorporating a strategic extension of the Appleway Trail, the project establishes a premier trailhead that links regional transit with local recreation, transforming the site into a dynamic hub where civic life and outdoor activity intersect.
The project’s success is rooted in a robust public engagement process that moved beyond simple feedback to ensure the design was a direct reflection of the community’s highest priorities. This community-led vision provided the roadmap for our landscape architecture and civil engineering teams as they navigated the economic complexities of rising construction costs. Through a dedicated partnership with City staff, we maintained the project’s momentum, delivering a resilient and vibrant destination that stands as a testament to the power of collaborative, people-first planning.
