UPS Athletics and Aquatics Center
The Athletics and Aquatics Center at the University of Puget Sound is a $19.4M design-build project that expands and modernizes the athletic facilities within Memorial Fieldhouse. The project also introduced a completely new aquatics center, adding a total of 39,000 SF to the campus recreation complex.
The remodeled fitness center nearly doubled in size and now includes expanded cardio and weight training areas, upgraded locker rooms, and a new climbing wall. Athletic teams gained dedicated meeting rooms, an enhanced sports medicine suite, and new staff offices.
The new aquatics center features a 25-yard competition pool with eight regulation-width lanes and three warm-up lanes, replacing the aging 1957 Wallace Memorial Pool. The pool facility connects to Memorial Fieldhouse through a modern great hall, which includes a hall of fame with video displays, a café, and a variety of amenities for visitors.
Accessibility was significantly improved throughout the complex with the addition of two elevators, as well as ADA-accessible and gender-neutral restrooms.
“The Athletics and Aquatics Center is an important asset for our residential liberal arts college community,” said President Ronald R. Thomas. “Puget Sound is a place where students come from all over the country and around the world for a 24/7 living and learning experience. In addition to meeting the athletic and recreational needs of our campus community, the new facilities will serve as a resource for our programs in academic disciplines such as exercise science, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. As with all of our facilities, the Athletics and Aquatics Center will not only support the academic and cocurricular experience, but create new opportunities for student success.”
